I never thought about it, but I guess in those days updated phonebooks weren’t annually distributed to all customers? Apparently not. I’m working right now but I think the list price for the business AND residential book in 1960 was $40.. which is like $200 today. It changed when businesses started advertising in the Yellow Pages. I don’t recall anything about a unique ring, like I’ve read about, but maybe I wasn’t allowed to answer the phone? We lived in the county and had party line service in 1967 and 68. When we moved to the city we had a single line. I don’t believe we had an option at either location – just took what was available.
